The Basics of Poker

Almost all games of poker have five cards in each hand. The cards are ranked from Ace to Ace, and are arranged in sequential order.

The goal of poker is to make the highest hand possible. There are several ways to do this. The three best combinations are Straight, Full House and Four of a Kind. The highest hand wins the pot. In a tie, the highest card wins.

Poker is a gambling game that requires a large round table, a shuffled deck of cards, and chips. The main difference between games is the amount of money that the player is betting. Most of the time, the minimum ante is a fixed amount, usually $1 or $5.

The ante is used to buy in to the game. When the dealer is ready to deal, the cards are shuffled and the deck is passed to the next player. This is done clockwise.

Players must decide whether to raise, fold or check. If they call, they must match the amount that is being bet. When the call is made, they will show their cards to the other players to determine who won the pot. The players then decide if they want to make another bet. If they do not want to bet, they must fold.

Some games allow for a wild card. A wild card can be used to substitute for any other card. The wild card can take any suit. Other versions of the game may specify that a wild card can only take a certain suit.
