The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players bet chips (representing money) to win the “pot” (all bets made in one deal). The object of the game is to get a good poker hand, which may consist of two or more distinct pairs, a three of a kind, or any combination of these. The highest pair wins ties, except when it is a high card, in which case the second-highest pair wins.

When betting starts, the player to the left of the dealer (as designated by the rules of the specific game) has the privilege or obligation to place the first bet. Each subsequent player must place a bet equal to or higher than the last, as established by the rules of the specific game being played.

If a player has a strong poker hand and suspects that other players hold inferior hands, the player may choose to bet (try to make others call) or fold (quit). Players are encouraged to bluff.

At the end of the betting round, each player reveals his or her cards. The player with the best poker hand wins the pot. If nobody has a winning hand, the pot is split among the players who remain in the game. There are many variations of poker, including games where the lowest poker hand wins the pot, or where the highest and lowest poker hands divide the pot. Generally, the less you describe a series of bets, raises, checks and reveals, the better (the focus should be on who will outwit whom in this particular scene). The more you know about the game, the more interesting your scene will be.
